2006...What a year!

We saw many changes at PRH during the 2006 year. Some were for the better, some were rather sad losses. We grew our adoption program to include working relationships with several other adoption groups...this is a 2 fold deal. We help them and they help us. Since most other adoption organizations work off of a "foster family" method and we typically do not...it was a win win. We provide clean, profiled dogs and they provide foster homes and placement. Through this adoption effort we have moved more than 60 hounds into other adoption programs thus allowing us to move more dogs out of Florida and off the farms across the country. This has helped to place senior dogs such as broods and studs as well. It was something that was needed to help the farmers move their breeding stock as well as the track dogs.

We finally got rid of the crates we had borrowed for the Orange County Rescues. YIPEE!!! We had been trying to purge them since Spring and finally downsized a bit and purged them this past Fall. Thus we are back to 48 crates. However the goal is to keep 36 adoption dogs and at least 6 crates for boarders. We have managed to maintain a steady flow of boarders throughout the year. Our boarding this year alone supported 6 months of our mortgage! The goal is to pay for the entire year and be self funding. Not sure it will ever happen but without a goal, what are we working for?

We saw a decline in breedings this year. Down nearly 20% from the previous year with only about 24,000 dogs whelped. That ranks a Greyhound about 12th in the popularity standings if it were a Pug which is currently (2005) ranked 12th! Can you believe the AKC registers nearly a million dogs per year?? Seems there are more than 125,000 AKC Labradors registered each year! Those numbers are astounding to me! Thankfully the Greyhound has adoption groups across the country to place the what now seem like relatively small numbers compared to those Labs! Maybe that's what sets Greyhounds aside from other breeds as well. I just don't know. Funny how when you look at the AKC numbers, only 142 Greyhounds are registered. That makes their popularity level of 134! Wow....I just can't imagine that! I mean, don't we all think this is the greatest breed known to man! LOL

We (Kerry and I) went to Nationals this past year. If you don't know what Nationals is let me tell you. Every Spring and Fall the National Greyhound Association has a "meet." At this meet breeders, farmers, kennel owners and trainers come from all over to see what's "up for sale!" This tradition goes back 100 years and is the very lifeblood of the sport that we call greyhound racing. Farmers brought their stock to sell....see who raised the fastest dog, see who's gonna buy that fastest dog and see what happens when it hits the track! Its very exciting! The history of the breed is amazing and when you get to meet people who have been in this business for more than 50 years (yes there are some old timers, I believe the elder is 93) and you hear the stories of how they used to move dogs around the country. Its just very moving. Many people do not understand the sport, and after seeing, hearing and listening to the people at the meet - I have found appreciation for all that comes with breeding, raising and training greyhounds! When we went back for the Fall meet, Kerry and I actually got to help in one of the kennels, sprinting dogs in the sprint path! Man those suckers love to run! It was very fun. We made a lot of new friends, gained support for our adoption efforts and probably educated a couple people about adoption!! All and all it was a good experience.

On another note...we saw milestones this year!

+ A dog named Ozzie The Man became a superstar winning nearly 60 races in a row! He even has his own My Space!

+ Cynthia Branigan's adoption program, Make Peace With Animals hit a mark of 5000 dogs placed in homes!

+The NGA threw out a few bad apples and yanked their privileges!

+The riches dog race in History, The Million Dollar Race, was run at Derby Lane in St Pete for the first time.

+A female by the name of Greys Calibrator won that race! She was the only female in a field of 8! 7 boys and she dusted em!

+Adoption is nearing the 90% of all eligible dogs inching us one step closer to the 100%!

+A dog named Greys Bricklayer sold for a record setting $80,000 at the Spring auction.

All and all it was a good year! I look forward to 2007. Happy Hounding!!

We are starting new programs at PRH!

We now have a local Senior Incentives program.

Thanks to a dear friend in PA, I asked our dog doc if he could help us out a bit and help with the future care of some of the older kids. Everyone loves the older kids but to be honest, I think some people steer clear of them because of the financial liabilities that may come with them as they enter their golden years. This is understandable as not everyone has endless pockets yet they are willing to provide ample care to a pet! This is to be respected. Thus moving forward Dr Jim Lofgren of Lake Brandt Vet will be providing a senior wellness plan for anyone who adopts a dog that is 7 years or older. This plan offers 15% discounts on many services including the much needed dentals and rotating blood work so often necessary with the older kids. I will look for other vets who may do the same in surrounding areas. Once I have something to model off of, I don't think it will be all that difficult to accomplish!

So if you have ever thought about adopting a senior hound, this may be just the incentive you need to follow your heart! The older kids make great pets and many just want a blanket to rest their weary bones on. If you never loved a grey face, you will!

Take a look at the "Who's in the kennel" page to see who you may wish to bring home to your home! Never know what you'll find!

New Foster Program getting ready for action!

It's still in the "working out" phase...but we plan to offer food, heartworm meds and local medical care to foster families. Certain requirements will be necessary such as dogs that NEED fostering and what the home requirements will be. Ideally we want dogs in homes with your help!

Orange County Updates

Yes what you have been reading is true, there were several greyhounds taken from a home in Orange County. We have taken in 22 greyhounds and 2 Lurchers, one who is probably going to end up the kennel mascot when we get done with him, he just too cute!

We do need help with this. Donations of dog food, blankets, laundry detergent, dog shampoo, large cans of green beans and canned pumpkin would be great as it helps fatten up dogs. Rice, non salted chicken broth, canned dog food, monetary donations to assist with the vetting are greatly appreciated.

June 20th, 2005

We have started to post some of the OC kids in the kennel on the website. All are noted as Orange County dogs. Many of them will be ready to undergo anesthesia within a week or two.

We also would like to let everyone know of their progress...please visit the message board where you can read updates, read about some of the dogs, ask any questions, and keep aware of their progress and adoptions!

Also...a HUGE thank you to everyone who donated their time Saturday at Hillsborough Hog Day. We knew the people would want to know about these dogs especially since this was something that happened in their back yard so to speak. You all did an excellent job of staying on topic...Adopting a hound! Not only did you show true class but you also hit a record with donations at any event! $670.00 was counted, we do not count change, but that bucket was heavy!

THANK YOU!!! And Thank You to the attendees of Hog Day who gave so generously!

JULY 29, 2005

To date...Bandit, Cruncher, Floozie, Smoothie, Flannie, Scarlette, Garrett, Apple and Lew have been placed in homes ro returned to their rightful owners. We still have several who have now been spayed/neutered and/or had their medical treatments, dentals and are ready to go into a home! If you care to open your home to a senior...we have some really greyt dogs that would love to give you their love. The average age of the OC dogs is age 7. If you can't adopt...why not virtually adopt and help with their care!! Come play with the kids today!

October 5th, 2005

Unfortunately we lost Chase on Oct 1st. Chase was one of the older gals who had recovered quite well from her ordeal. She had been placed in a foster home and as a result of cancer, she went into gastric torsion. She had a great few months in a home and thats the best part...she had recovered and healed, rested her had in a home and found love. The only remaining dogs at the kennel are Baxter, Larry, Finelli, Fruity and George. All are intermingled with the rest of the kennel and unless you ask..you wouldnt know they are OC dogs!!

The case is still in court and no one has been punished yet.

December 27th, 2005

As the year comes to a close I would just like to say that as upset as many of us were by the Orange County Case, we have seen some sort of justice. I know it will never be enough punishment in many of our eyes, but the laws of NC animal cruelty and abuse are just not stringent enough to do much more. The prosecutor did the very best he could with the penalties he could enforce, I believe even he was upset that he could not do more. But, we all grew from this experience. In some way, negative, positive...we all grew.

On a happier note....all but two of the OC dogs have been adopted into homes! Baxter who I think is quite possibly one of the best dogs, is still residing at the kennel and Larry the cartoon dog is still here! I hope someone will see in their hearts to let these guys into their home. They are both neat dogs!

To view more details about the OC case, including the sentencing, please visit www.petabuse.com

THANK YOU to everyone who has helped with this.....EVERYONE!!!! Thank you!!!

Many of the volunteers and adopters from PRH have inquired about or have visited some of the farms and/or tracks that their dogs may have come from. Please do not ever hesitate to ask for help contacting people if you're going to be in Florida. We would love the opportunity to educate you and let you see what Greyhounds are all about!

Shoot, you just may get a guided tour!!

And please, take pictures and bring them back to share with everyone else. We love hearing about everyone's trips and travels...how many can say they have actually visited a working greyhound farm and seen puppies!?

Our first trip to pick up dogs and retrieve our dog trailer!

Dr. Jim and Bill left eye-opener early Saturday morning. They arrived in Florida early afternoon, ran a few errands making sure the trailer was good to go and then spent late afternoon on the farm. The dogs were loaded up early Sunday morning and Dr. Jim and Bill headed back to Greensboro. It was a turn around trip, not what we had planned on but considering everyone's schedule we had to make a quickie this go round. Nineteen dogs arrived that day, of course I took pictures!

Here they come!! Jim and Bill pulled in around 5 pm Sunday evening. Jim backed into our unloading area and the smiles were incredible!

We had a lot of volunteers to help off load dogs. Thank you so much to those of you who came out and helped.

The doggies chillin out in the turnout lots after the long ride to their new retirement center!

Even after the long drive back to NC, Dr Jim and Nurse Lauren drew blood from the dogs to get started on all the necessary vet work.

Picking Up The Doggies!

We are planning on making adventures out of our trips to pick up dogs. We have learned so much about about the wonderful world of Greyhounds that we feel we just have to share our knowledge and experiences. Therefore we will ask if anyone would like to join us on a trip when we go get dogs. We call these Hauls. We get our dogs from working farms and from race tracks. If you would like to get email notification about the trips we take please just let us know and we will inform you. Our trips are usually well planned and always fun!  mailto:lovemygreyhound@aol.com or phone 336-852-9444

News from past tenants of PRH!

We have received several pictures and emails as well as letters from just about every previous tenant of PRH! We love the stories and love hearing how each dog is adjusting and coming into their own personality. After all watching the Greyhound personality emerge and meld with yours is what makes Greyhound ownership so much fun and so intriguing! We have many who are looking for brothers and sisters for their only child! Seems they have caught a case "potatochipitus" in which no one can have just one!!! One of the unique things about the way PRH functions is that we have the opportunity to find the true brother or sister or maybe even a son or daughter of any of our previous tenants. This has been great fun since its just kind of neat to have an actual sibling!

Keep those emails and pictures coming!!

We Have T-Shirts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to designer Mik Wilkens, we now have our own personalized group T-shirt!

These T-shirts are available free with a $100.00 donation or you may purchase them for $15.00. We can ship them...shipping is $4.00 in the lower 48.

The t-shirts are available in ash (light grey) and white. (pictured below on ash)

We will have decals available soon!

Look for our Mobil Unit around town!

On July 19 we arrived in Greensboro with our first official haul of dogs. Bill and I have been trained by some of the best in the business and felt very confident hauling dogs for the first time. (other than by private vehicle!) We ran into a bit of a storm coming home, but we made good time considering we had to stop by the farm and see the puppies on the way out of Florida!

So here it is.....Mobil Unit 1 of Project Racing Home!! Decals are now on the doors!!! If you see me kindly beep and wave!!!

Miss Cleo Retires!

Randleman NC....Miss Cleo , the pride of PRH has announced her retirement from cat testing! After nearly a year Miss Cleo has officially staked her claim as house pet and her tour of duty has ended!  We are so sad to see Miss Cleo go yet we are thrilled to announce that she will be moving to Florida and living the life of kitty luxury and kitty mayhem! We sincerely think Cleo will be a long legacy with PRH as she was our first kennel cat. We will all miss her.

Miss Cleo's retirement party is scheduled for Saturday April 3rd from Noon until 3 pm. Please feel free to bring in a snack to share with the human kind and if you would like to bring a bon voyage present for Miss Cleo...I'm sure she won't mind!

Bon Voyage puppers!!!

Introducing Crash Bandicat...the newest tenant at PRH!

So now we introduce the newest addition to the kennel...CRASH!!!

Crash was found literally half dead on the road by one of the volunteers and my daughter. They brought him to me like I could perform surgery or something!! I fixed Crash's face and put him back together. He literally lived in an Easter basket on my night stand for a few days! I will tell you - I did not think he was going to live. I bottle fed him...actually used a syringe! I had to wipe his butt to stimulate his bowels and urine flow! He was no more than the size of my hand. Well...guess what?? He lived and what a wholly terror he is!!!

Crash had been living at my home, torturing my cat for several months...he is now residing with Cleo until she vacates the condo Easter weekend. Trust me...Cleo will be glad to be rid of the little bugger as much as my cat at home was!!! No love lost there!! Crash performed his first tour a couple weeks ago and I must say..other than the fact that he THINKS he's a dog...he did great! He knows who's cat friendly and who isnt!! Seems Cleo's physic ability may have rubbed off on him.

Crash one month after arrival at Chez' Jewell

Crash learns "the Roach" from one of his best buds!

Feb 06 - we thought we would give Crash a home, but he decided he liked it at the kennel so much we decided to place the kitten we had in a home instead! This is Crash now and this is HIS turf!!! I swear he really does think he is a DOG! And yes the picture is in one of the playlots!!!! LOL

Become a Foster Parent!

The Purpose

The purpose of a foster family program for the retiring greyhounds is to get the dogs acclimated to the home environment. Fostering allows the dogs to have an adjustment period after track life with a family that understands the specifics of retiring racers. We feel our foster families are able to add increased security to the hounds because they will be introduced to kids, stairs, windows, cats and other pets. Thus making his transition a little less stressful for him and his new adopted family.

It would be great if you already had a grey or another dog in your home but its not necessary. However, it is an advantage as the new grey learns from his elder and makes housebreaking a breeze.

The End Result

By fostering a grey, you will afford him the ability to acclimate to the newly adopted home a little quicker and a little less stressed. If you currently have a grey or have had one before, you know what its like and how important fostering can be for some dogs. Think of how many dogs you could make happy by fostering!!!

Help make a difference!

The Application

Each foster family must fill out an application and be approved. Once approved the foster family must attend a special class explaining what is expected of them and what to be aware of regarding your foster. The class is mandatory for becoming a certified foster family with Project Racing Home.
